DIY All Natural Purpose Spray Cleaner Without Toxic Chemicals

With products containing carcinogens, asthma instigators, and poisons, some sparkly cleaners might come at a high price to your family’s health:

According to the press release:

Just 7 percent of cleaning products adequately disclosed their contents. To uncover what’s in common household cleaners, EWG’s staff scientists spent 14 months scouring product labels and digging through company websites and technical documents. EWG staff reviewed each ingredient against 15 U.S. and international toxicity databases and numerous scientific and medical journals.

According to the EWG study, 53 percent of cleaning products under review contained lung-harming ingredients. In addition, well-known carcinogens like formaldehyde and chloroform were found in several cleaners.

How it Works

Essential oils and vinegar are the key ingredients that kill bacteria and common household contaminants such as e. coli, staphylococcus, and salmonella. When the orange peels soak in the vinegar in direct sunlight, it extracts these essential oil into the vinegar.  To this, you’ll be adding powerful germ-fighting essential oils like peppermint, oregano, thyme, basil or cinnamon.

A study in the journal Molecules claims that plant essential oils are quickly becoming more widely accepted for their antimicrobial qualities.  In fact, they have been used for centuries to fight germs and bacteria.  Essential oils are effective in destroying microbes like bacteria and viruses because of the compounds they contain, including phenylpropanoids and terpenes.

Essential oils offer a safer alternative to harmful chemical cleaners.

Vinegar works against bacteria and germs, because is about 5% acetic acid. It’s the acid that kills bacteria and viruses, by denaturing the proteins and fats in 99% of bacteria and germs.

Together with essential oils, this spray is a powerhouse against over 90% of germs and bacteria.

Which Essential Oils?

The following essential oils would make excellent choices as additions to your home-made cleaning spray.

Oregano: antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. A powerful immune boosting essential oil that is effective against over 90 different bacteria, including many drug resistant varieties.

Thyme: antimicrobial, inhibits growth of infectious microorganisms. Together with Oregano provides a powerhouse of immune boosting properties.

Basil: antispasmodic properties that relax muscles, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial.

Peppermint: enhances all the other oils, pain relieving, antimicrobial, stimulates circulation, ideal for those who need an assist with breathing challenges, aids digestion, and scientific studies found it heightens mental awareness and improves accuracy of thought and recall.

Cinnamon:  anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-parasitic properties.

  • Spray Bottle
  • White Vinegar or Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Mason or Ball Canning jar with Lid
  • Funnel
  • Essential oils of your choice
  • Orange peels

As you and your family consume oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruits, take the peels, and place them in the canning jar, and cover with vinegar.  When the jar is full, put in direct sunlight for 1-2 weeks.

Using funnel, pour orange vinegar into your spray bottle.  Add 1/4 tsp essential oils, and shake well.

Now you are ready to clean without using any toxic chemicals.  Vinegar and essential oils kill and disinfect more effectively than most chemicals, without any danger to you or your family’s health.
